Liturgical Trivia - The Paschal Candle

Have you noticed this Easter season that as you came in to church on Sunday morning that the Paschal Candle was already lit, and that the Acolytes did not extinguish the Paschal Candle?  The flame of the Paschal Candle symbolizes Christ at the light of the world.  Traditionally, the Paschal Candle (sometimes known as the Christ Candle) was lit from a new fire at the Easter Vigil and all processed into the church following the Paschal Candle.  The candle was kept lit from then until the Day of Ascension.  After that it was used for Baptisms to signify the Spirit and fire that John the Baptist promised to those who were baptized in Christ and the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised his disciples at his Ascension.  It is also often lit for funeral services as a sign of the hope of the resurrection.   It is not practical for St. Francis to leave a candle lit for 40 days, but we could give honor to this tradition by having it lit before you came into the church for quiet and meditation before the service and leaving it lit until after you have left the service.
